A shared vision for Denmark's tiny island where tourism strengthens, not disrupts, island life
A shared vision for Denmark's tiny island where tourism strengthens, not disrupts, island life
With two ferry lines and only an hour to Copenhagen, the small Danish island of Orø has also become more accessible. More visitors have brought more life and a familiar island dilemma: how do you develop tourism without losing what makes the place special? That question sparked The Strategic-Physical Development Plan for Orø – a pilot project under Dansk Kyst- og Naturturisme, Holbæk Municipality, and Destination Sjælland – with the goal to define a shared vision for how Orø can be both a home, a workplace and a sustainable, year-round destination. Together with Hele Landet and LYTT Architecture, Group NAO helped set the strategic direction for the plan, built around three interconnected dimensions of people, places, and offers. The key ambition was for tourism to be a lever for the community, not a goal in itself.
The result set a conceptual direction for the island: Orø’s future isn’t just about becoming a destination, it’s about building community and facilitating the meeting between locals and visitors, at the harbour, along the trails, in the hall or in the local café, to strengthen each other’s experience of island life.
